Privacy

Protected by European law

β€œEU privacy” is printed on a lot of websites as if it were a badge. It is worth more than that, because it changes what is legally possible with your data. Here is the concrete difference.

A US-based provider

The CLOUD Act reaches them

US authorities can compel an American company to hand over customer data β€” regardless of which country the servers are in. A European data center does not help if the company answering the request is American. No promise in their terms can override that law.

XS News

Dutch company, Dutch jurisdiction

XS News B.V. is registered in the Netherlands (KVK 08145640), and the servers you connect to from Europe stand in the Amsterdam region. The company you have a contract with is Dutch, under Dutch and EU law β€” so the CLOUD Act has nothing to attach to.

A European company, not a US subsidiary

The legal entity, the contract and the people are all here. That is what makes the rest of this section enforceable: a data-protection promise is only worth as much as the law that applies to the company making it.

GDPR is not optional for us

You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted β€” and we have to answer. Those are rights you hold by law, not concessions we grant in a terms document.

What we deliberately do not keep

We do not log what you download. No record of which articles you requested or which groups you read. What we do keep β€” your account β€” stays on European servers. Our US servers carry Usenet articles only, so North American customers get a short route.

Why a European provider makes a practical difference →

Speed

No caps, no throttling

Plenty of providers advertise β€œunlimited” and then slow you down once you actually use it. We take the word literally: no speed cap, no throttling, no quiet fair-use ceiling. The limit is your own line.

Servers in Europe and the USA

Two continents, so the route between you and the articles stays short wherever you are. Short routes mean fewer hops, lower latency and a speed that holds instead of fluctuating.

No artificial throttling

We do not slow accounts down after a volume threshold, at peak hours, or on particular groups. There is no hidden clause that quietly reduces what you paid for.

Up to 100 connections

Enough parallel connections to saturate a fast line. Your newsreader can pull many articles at once instead of queueing them, which is what turns raw bandwidth into real download speed.

Retention & completion

The two numbers that matter

Experienced Usenet users check these two figures first, and for good reason: they decide whether the thing you are looking for is there, and whether it arrives whole. Everything else is comfort.

4.000+ days of retention

Retention is how far back the articles on a server reach. Ours currently covers more than eleven years, and it grows by a day every day β€” we add storage instead of deleting old articles to make room.

What it means for you: something posted years ago is still there when you finally go looking for it. A thin retention window is only invisible until the day you need it.

99,8% completion

A download is split into hundreds of separate articles and your newsreader needs all of them. Completion is the share that is actually present β€” measured per article, not per file.

What it means for you: fewer broken downloads and less repair work. Small differences here have an outsized effect, because a single missing part can spoil an otherwise complete post.

Security

Encrypted on every connection

The legal side is covered under Protected by European law further up. This is the technical side: what protects the connection between your newsreader and our servers, every single time it opens.

256-bit SSL/TLS, always on

Encryption is the default on port 563, not a setting you have to discover. Your internet provider sees an encrypted tunnel to a Dutch server and nothing about what travels through it.

Secure authentication

Your own username and password authenticate every connection, and you can change the password yourself in the member area at any time β€” useful if you ever suspect a device is no longer trustworthy.

Nothing to install

Usenet works through your own newsreader over a standard protocol. There is no XS News app collecting telemetry on your machine, because there is no app β€” just a server, a port and your credentials.

Pricing

Never a price increase

The price you see is the price you pay, for as long as you stay. No introductory rate that doubles in month four, no bandwidth fee hidden in the terms, no cancellation obstacle course.

0

No price increases. In over twenty years.

Not one. In two decades of running this service we have never raised the price of an existing plan β€” while storage, retention and bandwidth all grew. We would rather earn the renewal than engineer it.

Support

Support that speaks Usenet

Usenet has its own vocabulary β€” NZB files, par2 repair, connection counts, SSL ports, retention windows. A general help desk cannot work with that. Ours does it every day, and has for twenty years.

Usenet questions

Which newsreader to pick, how to set connections and SSL, what a par2 file is for, why a post will not repair. Real answers, from people who use these tools themselves.

Account & billing

Changing a plan, an invoice that needs explaining, a payment that did not go through, a subscription you want paused. Handled by the same team, without a hand-off.

Connection problems

Slow speeds, refused logins, a route that behaves oddly from your country. These get investigated on the platform side, not forwarded to a form and left with you.
